Sun Damage

What is Sun Damage?

It is very important to understand the effects of sun damage especially while living in a southern coastal area.  Sun exposure causes most of the damaging skin changes which are associated with aging.  The sun’s UV light damages the elastin fibers and collagen in our skin over a period of time.  You will notice sagging skin, stretching and loss of elasticity once these fibers are broken down.  The skin will also become more fragile taking longer periods of time to heal as well.  Sun damage does not become apparent for many years.  It is when you get older that you will see the effects of sun damage from when you were younger.

Different Types of Sun Damage:

-Age Spots – Age spots can also be called liver spots and solar lentigines.  Age spots are flat, gray, brown or black spots.  They vary in size and usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders, arms and decollate.  Age spots are most common in adults over the age of 40.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

The appearence of fine lines and wrinkles is one of the most common and first signs of aging.  Although, wrinkles are the natural aging process, other factors that can cause lines and wrinkles are smoking, facial expressions, stress, exposure to the sun, pollution and more.  As you age your skin can get thinner and your oil productions can change resulting in many changes:

~ Fat pads in your face begin to lose volume causing a sunken appearance in the jawline.

~Collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis are what provides our skin with texture and volume.  Around the age of 30 these fibers begin to break down causing lines, wrinkles and folds to develop.

~ The skin cell lifecycle slows down which results in a thicker epidermis causing a dry and uneven skin texture.

~ Our expression muscles build up over time which causes wrinkles in the skin.

These are the most common areas you will see wrinkles appear.

We do have many treatments available for anti-aging.  These treatments include moderate and deep chemical peels, botox, juvederm and many results driven products available such as Obagi and SkinCeuticals.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a facial condition typically appearing in men and women between the age of 30 and 60.  This condition affects over 45 million people worldwide.   It is marked by redness or flushing of the face and skin mainly concentrating in the cheeks, nose and forehead.  Sometimes Rosacea can be mistaken for acne or dermatitis although, they can co-exist.

There are common triggers for rosacea which can cause flushing and blushing.  These triggers include: stress, exposure to hot/cold, caffine, alcohol and spicy foods.  Learning what triggers your rosacea may help control your rosacea flair ups.

Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea

~Blushing and Flushing: This is the earliest sign of Rosacea.  Facial redness can come and go.  More servere cases of rosacea have very frequent redness and can even look like a sunburn.

~Blood Vessels: You can visibly see blood vessels on the surface of the skin.

~Dry, Thick and/or Swelling skin

~Bumps and Pimples: These may appear to be acne and sometimes blackheads may appear.

~Burning or stinging sensations.

Treatments for Rosacea

IPL treatments are great for rosacea patients.  IPL treatments target the components of blood causing damage to capillary walls.  We also have many products which can help rosacea as well.  We recommend calling to schedule your free skin consultation to see which direction you should go with your treatments.  843.249.5433

Acne and Scarring

What is Acne?

Acne is the inflamation of oil producing glands of the skin hair follicles. This is a very common skin condition affecting people of all ages most commonly 13-19.  Studies show that 30% off teenagers suffer from sever acne and receive acne treatments to prevent scaring.  Acne can be found on the face, back, neck and chest.  There are two types of acne: inflammatory acne and non-inflammatory acne.  Inflamed acne can damage the skin and cause scaring.  We would recommend that you treat this condition to avoid further damage.  Acne can be controlled with the proper products/treatments.

What causes acne?

~Menstration is one of the most common causes of acne.  Women may get acne 2-7 days before their cycle begins.

~Some medicine increases the oil production and blocks the pores which can cause acne.

~Greases, oils, cosmetics, humidity, sweating can block the pores.

~Acne is caused by an increased production of the male sex hormone during puberty that stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.

~Increased production of sebum makes the opening of the sebaceous glands narrower, preventing the sebum from escaping.  This causes the glands to swell, resulting in whiteheads and blackheads.

~A common skin bacteria feeds on the sebum and produces waste products and fatty acids, which irritate and inflame the sebaceous gland.  This can result in redness and spots.

What treatments are available for Acne?

It is really important to control acne through quality products.  Severe acne may need medication and can also be controlled through peels.  Severe acne may need several treatments in a 6-8 week period to see the results.  To determine which treatments or products would be best for you please call 843.249.5433 to schedule your free skin care consultation.
