Hi, Beth, nurse practitioner at Touch Med Spa. Happy to be with you today.
Today, I wanted to talk about breast cancer screening. Now, before I say anything, I want to preface this by saying I am not saying not to get mammograms. I’m not saying I never recommend not getting mammograms. What I am saying is, for screening purposes, there are really a lot better ways that we have available now.
Number one, and first and foremost, will always be self-breast examination. Women need to be doing this at least once a month. I know a lot of men have actually found lumps for women as well. So, examine those breasts. If you notice something that’s abnormal, that’s when you want to get it checked out.
Beyond that, there’s another test called the Aurori test. It’s actually a home test that you can do yourself. It recognizes some proteins that are abundant in our tear fluid. So, it’s like a little litmus test. You kind of put it in the corner of your eye, and it detects two proteins that are really abundant in the earlier stages of breast cancer.
You send this test off, and you get a risk stratification. So, if you’re low risk, you know, just keep doing those self-breast examinations. If it comes back and you’re moderate to higher risk, then that’s where we should get some other imaging, right?
There’s a perfect thing out there, and I want to give a shout-out to one of my mentors. She probably doesn’t even know me, but I’m trying to talk to her team to get this coming here to this area. I think it would be amazing. It’s called Perfect QT or QT imaging. It’s only available in Pennsylvania and Ohio right now, and then some places in California, but it’s actually a 3D sound wave of the breast. It’s very safe. We’re not compressing the breast. There’s no radiation with this. It actually creates a 3D imaging of the breasts, and it’s great for people who’ve had breast augmentation as well.
For those people who get concerned about doing mammograms if they’ve had something like that, then if we see something in those areas with QT imaging, then let’s go over to the mammogram for a more diagnostic look at the breast. So, this is all just for screening. I just don’t recommend screening with mammograms. It’s targeted, focused radiation on the breast, and I just don’t think we need to be doing that for screenings.
So, I’m going to provide all the links below in the bio for all the information I talked about. If you have any questions, give us a call here at 843-249-5433.
